Is your KID too young for Facebook?

Without thinking I recently posted an article about sex on my Facebook page. Okay, well it was around 10 a.m. so I was thinking that the kids are in school so they won’t see this, right? WRONG! I got a text from a friend of mine later that afternoon who was furious at my post.  I was shocked! Then I remembered that Facebook rules state that you have to be 13 to have a page. Well, her daughter is 9 and then I thought oh no!! And so is my other friends daughter, and my nieces, and my cousin, and my other friends kids, and so on and so on!! What’s going on here? Isn’t 9 too young? I guess many of my friends don’t think so. Michelle Obama recently came out stating that she is against young kids having a Facebook page and that her daughters age 9 and 12, do not have a Facebook page.   I wonder what decisions I will have to make in the future about my daughter and the computer. Things are changing is a rapid pace and security and privacy issue are still on the forefront. Is is it really okay for 9 years olds to be on Facebook? Maybe the peer pressure is really high, but don’t they have any fear about sexual predators? Just found an article today that states that half of the U.S. 12 year olds are on Facebook. Okay, maybe I’m just old fashioned, but it just seems crazy. Kids need to get outside.

I have a friend that let her 3rd grader have a Facebook account. They’re typically a very conservative family — stepdad’s a preacher, mom runs a Bible study group. So it really surprised me. It always takes me aback when I see a comment from her on something I wrote. My 6th grader isn’t allowed on FB (nor, luckily, does she have any interest yet). I usually won’t even accept kids as friends because I don’t think they should be on there and don’t want to curtail my content…not that it’s bad to begin with, but you know what I mean.

I accept kids as my friends but then immediately block them from reading any of my posts. I do the same for my clients.

Facebook is just one problem we have!!! Keep in mind that there are many pregnant 12 year olds out there too. Parents need to get a clue!!! I live in the county that for many years had the highest teen pregnancy rate in GA….enough already people!!! Children need boundaries and discipline!!! We don’t need another ENABLER!!!! And that is what the modern electronics are…cell phones are given to kids who are “hooking up”; instant messaging also allows for “private talks”. (As you can see these things make me VERY upset!!!)

I don’t accept friends kids as friends. I think that muddies the waters.
